Do corporate social media policies need updating?

Here’s a note from Alison Taylor about this Thomson Reuters article:

The question of what employee speech to allow and promote has become fraught.

Should employees be allowed to say what they like on social media?

What if it’s a topic the company has a position on?

What if they are in senior leadership and may be assumed to be speaking for the company?

What if the view is certain to generate internal conflict? Like, abortion for example?

Certainly, companies are having a hard time with this question, and paranoia, surveillance and inducements are among their doomed attempts to reassert control.
