How to transform an endowed charity’s impact investing
– Charities can go beyond grants to impact for good through how they invest their endowments.
– There’s a free “How-to” handbook on how to transform a charity’s impact.
Start with this article by Sir Ronald Cohen entitled “The Dawn of Impact Philanthropy.” And here’s a note from Jamie Broderick:
Charities are used to contributing to society through their grant activity. But now that we know that they can also do good with their endowment investments, it should be obligatory to consider tapping into that additional source of societal benefit.
There hasn’t exactly been a flood of charities moving into impact investing, but there are pioneers. And in addition to the good they are doing with their investments, they can multiply that impact by sharing their insights and experience with others. That is what Paul Blyth does in this article, as he outlines the experience of Ufi VocTech Trust, a UK charity focused on improving workplace skills through technology.
The write-up of their experience is effectively a handbook, an explicit, how-to guide on transforming an investment portfolio into a powerful resource to increase a charity’s impact for good. Trustees of endowed charities should take a look and consider what their version of this journey might look like.
