Growing up unknowingly “speaking racist” in the US

– You might not think you’re racist, but you are.
– We can’t help it because it’s surrounded us our entire lives.

My friend was doing her “homework” for a social consciousness class and found this 2-minute interview with Sonya Renee Taylor. She particularly liked her analogy, “If a baby grows up in a French-speaking household, it just grows up speaking French. When we grow up in the United States, we just grow up “speaking racism.”

White folks in the US are all racist not because they are bad people – but just because racism has surrounded us our whole lives. And once we recognize it, we can start doing something about it.
